You've known something was off for a long time. You just never had a word for it.
You just knew that things other people seemed to do automatically like starting the task, remembering the appointment, sitting through a meeting without your mind wandering three states away, were harder for you.
And you did it anyway. You made the deadline. You got the degree, the job, the promotion. You built a life that looks, from the outside, like everything is handled.
That's exactly why nobody caught it.
I'm Jennifer, a Licensed Professional Counselor at Cornerstone Counseling and Evaluation, LLC. I provide online adult ADHD evaluations for clients across Alabama (and in-person appointments in Jasper, Alabama for special circumstances). Evaluations start at $190 and combine a clinical interview with objective rating scales.
If you've been quietly wondering whether there's an actual explanation for all of this, let's find out together.
Adult ADHD goes undiagnosed constantly, especially in people who found ways to compensate early. If you were the responsible one, the smart one, the kid who could pull it together when it really mattered, no one had a reason to look closer. Your struggle was invisible because your results weren't.
For a lot of my clients, there's another layer. Mental health simply wasn't a thing your family believed in. Maybe your dad thought therapy was for people who couldn't handle life. Maybe the family answer to every hard feeling was to work harder, pray about it, or quit dwelling on it. So you did the only thing available to you: you decided the problem was your character.
Lazy. Scattered. Careless. Not applying yourself. Too sensitive.
You weren't any of those things. You were doing it on hard mode, without a map, and without anyone telling you a map existed.
Evaluation is right in my name because I believe adults deserve real answers, not a five-minute checklist and a shrug. Here's what the process involves.
A full clinical interview. We take the time to walk through your history — childhood, school, work, relationships — because adult ADHD doesn't appear out of nowhere at 34. We look at what's actually happening in your daily life right now, and how long it's been happening.
Objective rating scales. Standardized, normed measures give us data instead of impressions. They also help document the findings in a form other providers recognize and take seriously.
Ruling out what else it could be. Anxiety, depression, trauma, sleep problems, and thyroid issues can all look like ADHD from the outside. You deserve to know which one you're actually dealing with, and a careful evaluation is how we get there.
A clear explanation of the results. You'll leave understanding what I found in plain language, not holding a document you need a degree to decode.
If additional testing turns out to be appropriate for your situation, I'll explain what and why before anything is scheduled.
At your request, I provide collaborative documentation to your physician or prescriber.
If medication is something you want to explore (with your doctor), that conversation goes much better when your doctor has thorough written findings in hand instead of you trying to advocate for yourself in a fifteen-minute appointment. You decide whether that happens and what gets shared. You are in charge of your own information here. Remember, I do not write prescriptions. I provide you and your doctor with information needed to make informed decisions.
A lot of people expect the answer itself to be the relief. And it is, for about a week.
Then something more complicated shows up. Grief for the years you spent believing it was a moral failing. Anger at the people who should have noticed and didn't. And a genuinely disorienting question: if I'm not the person I've been white-knuckling my way through life as, then who am I?
That's where ongoing counseling comes in, and it's the piece people most often skip. Together we can work on:
Some clients come to me knowing they want the full evaluation. Some already have a diagnosis and want help with everything that came after it. All of those are fine places to start.
ADHD rarely travels alone, especially after years of going unrecognized.
Anxiety. Years of tracking every detail so nothing slips through creates a nervous system that never fully powers down.
Perfectionism. For a lot of undiagnosed adults, perfectionism wasn't a personality trait. It was survival.
Depression. Chronically falling short of your own potential wears people down over time.
Low self-esteem. It often hides underneath high achievement. Plenty of my clients look confident and feel like they're one mistake from being found out.
Relationship patterns. Rejection sensitivity, over-functioning, and the fear of being "too much" all shape how you show up with the people you love.
I'm licensed to work with clients in Alabama, Nevada, and Pennsylvania. Sessions are held securely online, which means:
For clients in and around Jasper, Alabama, limited in-person appointments are available in special circumstances. Ask me during your consult.
How much does an adult ADHD evaluation cost? Evaluations at Cornerstone Counseling and Evaluation start at $190. If additional testing is needed for your situation, the fee will be higher, and I'll discuss that with you before we schedule anything.
Can a Licensed Professional Counselor diagnose ADHD? Yes. As a Licensed Professional Counselor, diagnosing mental health conditions including ADHD is within my scope of practice. I do not prescribe medication, but I can provide documentation to your physician or prescriber at your request so they have thorough findings when you discuss treatment options.
What states do you serve? I provide online counseling for clients located in Alabama, Nevada, Pennsylvania, Georgia, Florida and Texas. Each state board has their own policies about different evaluations. In-person appointments in Jasper, Alabama are available in limited special circumstances.
Can an ADHD evaluation really be done online? Yes. An adult ADHD evaluation is built on a detailed clinical interview and standardized rating scales, both of which are conducted effectively over secure video. Online evaluations also remove a real barrier for adults with ADHD, who often struggle most with the logistics of getting to an appointment.
How long does the evaluation take? The evaluation can be conducted between one and two sessions depending on complexity.
Do you accept insurance? I do accept BCBS of Alabama, TriCare East and Medicare Part B (not advantage plans) for therapy. Each insurance has different policies about evaluations.
Do I need a referral from my doctor? No referral is needed. You can book directly.
Will I get a written report? Diagnostic results report will be uploaded to your client portal and a copy sent directly to your doctor if you have signed consent to do so.
I'm 45 and I've done fine so far. Is it too late for this to matter? Not at all. Many of my clients are diagnosed in their forties, fifties, and beyond. Getting an answer changes how you understand your entire history, and it opens up treatment options you never knew applied to you.
What if the evaluation shows I don't have ADHD? That's still a useful answer. A thorough evaluation looks at anxiety, depression, trauma, and sleep because those can produce similar symptoms. Knowing what you're actually dealing with is what makes effective treatment possible.
You've been powering through for a long time. You're allowed to stop.
